HKEx Reports On Trading Activity In 2013

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx) has published online its annual fact book for 2013, presenting a review of activity in the securities, derivatives, and commodities markets, as well as clearing and settlement information.
The fact book includes market indices' movements, trading statistics and analysis, corporate actions of listed companies, fund-raising figures, historical statistics, and results from surveys of the investing community.
The book shows healthy signs of growth in terms of market capitalization and trading activity. The total market capitalization of the securities market at the end of 2013 was just over HKD24 trillion (USD3.1 trillion) – 10 percent higher than at year-end 2012.
At the end of 2013 there were a total of 1,643 companies listed on HKEx markets. Of these, 797 were Mainland enterprises, constituting 57 percent by market capitalization, and 72 percent by annual equity turnover value. In addition, in 2013, there were 110 newly-listed companies, and total equity funds raised reached HKD374.3bn, of which the funds raised through initial public offerings increased year-on-year by 85 percent to HKD166.5bn.
Total securities market turnover in 2013 was HKD15.26 trillion, up 15 percent year-on-year. The average daily turnover for the overall securities market in 2013 showed an annual increase of 16 percent to HKD62.6bn, with a highest single-day turnover of HKD128.4bn on February 4, 2013, compared with a high of HKD127.3bn during 2012.
The HKEx derivatives (futures and options) market in 2013 recorded a total trading volume of 130 million contracts and an average daily trading volume of 532,905 contracts (both up 9 percent from 2012). The average daily trading volumes of futures products and options products were 210,553 contracts and 322,353 contracts, respectively.
