Carey Olsen was named Offshore Law Firm of the Year at the recent 2014 Lawyer Magazine Awards.
Carey Olsen is an offshore law firm operating in the British Virgin Islands; the Cayman Islands; Guernsey; Jersey; Cape Town, South Africa; and the City of London, UK, and employs 300 people. The firm was last year's runner-up, and came first this year for its work on the landmark Tchenguiz trust case.
The firm has been acting for some time for the joint liquidators of companies owned by entrepreneur Robert Tchenguiz. In a January 2014 judgment the Royal Court of Guernsey held that the trustees of the Tchenguiz Discretionary Trust, Investec Trust, were liable for all debts the trust owed, rather than having their liability capped.
The decision provides clarity on the rights of creditors dealing with trusts and their remedies against trustees.
John Greenfield, managing partner of Carey Olsen, said: "This case was complex and extremely interesting to work on. The Lawyer award serves to recognize our talented and dedicated litigation group across the firm. It cements our position as a leading offshore law firm."
The annual event, which has been hosted since 2002, awarded second place to Guernsey's Mourant Ozannes. Maples and Calder, last year's winners, came in third.
