Bahamas Removes VAT From Certain Education Fees

by Mike Godfrey, Lowtax.net, Washington

The Bahamas Department of Inland Revenue has advised that value-added tax is no longer chargeable on certain ancillary fees related to tuition. This follows the 2016/17 Budget that removed VAT from these fees from July 1, 2016.

VAT is no longer chargeable on the following supplies and fees: supplies of vocational training; registration fees; laboratory fees; graduation fees; field trips; examination services, and school cafeteria services.

VAT is also not due on supplies of graduation certificates; the use of school facilities, amenities and equipment; and sales of books and other reference materials previously considered not an integral part of course instruction.

The removal of VAT on ancillary fees related to tuition applies to all fees at pre-school, primary, high school, and tertiary levels, whether public or private.
