Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), the low-tax international financial center, has been granted observer status at the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners, the premier global forum for data protection regulators and privacy authorities.
ADGM is the only international financial center and data protection regulator to be accredited with this status in the Middle East and North Africa region. It means ADGM can participate in discussions on the international development of data protection and privacy standards and issues.
The granting of observer status to ADGM follows steps it has taken to align its data protection regulatory framework with international standards, including making the Data Protection Regulations 2015. These Regulations require all ADGM-registered entities to comply with certain standards and requirements when processing personal data.
Commenting on ADGM's new observer status, Dhaher bin Dhaher, CEO of the Registration Authority of ADGM, said: "ADGM is pleased to have the opportunity to meet with fellow international authorities and regulators on raising the practice of data protection and privacy. Maintaining confidence in the protection of personal data is critical to garnering trust and transparency in our jurisdiction and market. This is one of ADGM's ongoing commitments in upholding a fair, well-regulated and internationally-recognized platform."
