Slovakia: Personal Taxation
Rates of Income Tax
Personal income tax is levied at a flat rate of 19% on annual income up to EUR39,600. Income above that is taxed at 25% from January 1, 2013. Every individual is given a basic personal allowance of EUR3,735.94 for 2013 on income up to EUR19,458. For income above that, the allowance is reduced by EUR0.25 for every EUR1 of income above EUR19,458. Higher earners are assessed differently and their allowances may be less.
There are some exemptions from tax, including proceeds from the sale of property (depending on the length of time the property has been owned), proceeds from the sale of a private car (subject to having owned it for one year), and the reimbursement of travel expenses by employers (subject to limits).
