According to the International Monetary Fund’s latest estimates (2020), Romania has the 44th highest GDP per capita in the world. This represents a jump of 30 places from the country’s standing in 2013. Its 2019 ranking on the UN's Human Development Index was 49th, up from 56th in 2013. The official currency in Romania is the leu. Having joined the European Union in 2007, the country is obliged to adopt the euro at some point; this is currently scheduled to happen in 2024. Romania's GDP is the 13th largest in the European Union, and it has experienced a notable increase in foreign investment over recent years.
