Malta: Labour Regulation
Until EU accession, the main piece of employment legislation in Malta was the Industrial Relations Act 1976; evidently, the EU accession process has brought into force a number of directives. Malta's industrial relations are on a model which is quite similar to that of the UK, with an Industrial Tribunal, an Employers' Association and trade unions which tend to be craft-based rather than industry-based.
The structure of Maltese labour relations is probably one of the less happy legacies of the British involvement with the islands. Relationships tend to be somewhat confrontational, and the business community has had some difficulty in trying to clear away outdated and inefficient practices, particularly in the older sectors such as transport, and the ports.
