Executive Summary: Slovakia is situated in central Europe, bordered by five countries – Hungary, Ukraine, Poland, Austria and the Czech Republic. A landlocked country, the population of Slovakia is estimated to be 5.5m and the official language is Slovak. Slovakia has made significant economic reforms since its separation from the Czech Republic in 1993, and the country joined the EU in 2004. Tourism now employs 44% of the population and the country has a growing and successful automotive industry, with recent large investments by Volkswagen, Peugeot and Kia. Electronics, mechanical and chemical engineering and IT are also significant industries in the country. The economy has performed steadily since contracting in 2009, but long-term unemployment remains high and the Government has had problems bring down the budget deficit, which reached almost 5% in 2012. Taxes have increased to help the Government meet budget targets and the flat tax on personal and corporate income has been scrapped. Nevertheless, taxes remain relatively low, and cheap and skilled labour, combined with a liberal labour code, mean that Slovakia remains attractive to foreign investors.
