Executive Summary: Covering an area of 51,000 sq km, Bosnia and Herzegovina is located in South East Europe bordering Croatia and the Adriatic Sea, and also sharing borders with Montenegro and Serbia. The population is 3.8m and consists mainly of Bosnians and Serbs, with a significant minority of Croats. A member of the Central European Free Trade Agreement since 2007, Bosnia is now politically stable following the military conflict which engulfed the Balkans in the 1990s. Ethnic divisions in politics and other spheres of life are still present, however. Economically, Bosnia is a country in transition, with a large state sector and only limited market reforms to date. Growth has been muted in recent years and unemployment remains very high. Steel production, coal and vehicle assembly are among the main industries. Bosnia hopes to join the European Union and its currency is currently pegged to the euro.
