Hong Kong has been a business and financial centre for many years. Comparing to other countries in Asia, it has a number of advantages. One of them is that business in Hong Kong is not subject to many regulations.
If you decide to operate an ordinary business in Hong Kong, you will not be required to obtain any business license. The majority of business activities are non-regulated, with that being said there are still some activities that are regulated.
Regulated activities
We can divide the regulated activities into two categories: services and products. Depending on the business you would like to operate, you will need to apply for a certain type of business license.
The following business models are regulated:
- Retail store
- Restaurant
- Travel agency
- Financial services providers
- Education business
- Event management company
- Employment agency
If you are not sure, whether your business needs to obtain a license or not, you can check out the support and consultation centre for SME and use their tool: Business Licence Information Service.
The process of obtaining a business license is quick and straight forward. However, you will have to register a company in Hong Kong before submitting your application for the license.
