Trinidad And Tobago Says No Issue With VAT Refunds

Trinidad and Tobago has said it has not suspended VAT refunds, in a statement intended to debunk a recent news report.
The Finance Ministry said a local media report had misinterpreted an International Monetary Fund report into tax administration reform in the Caribbean region. According to the ministry, the article was wrong in taking some of the information pertaining to the territory to be current.
The Ministry said the study by the IMF of taxation in the Caribbean spanned a 16-year period from 2001 to 2017, and therefore, a passage about VAT refunds being suspended, if it had occurred at all, could have taken place at any time over the last 16 years. The observation in the IMF paper was, therefore, "not in real time," but related to a prior period, the Ministry said.
