Bermuda: Double Tax Treaties

Introduction

Since Bermuda does not levy direct taxes, there are no double tax treaties between Bermuda and other nations. There is however a tax treaty with the US which exempts insurance premium payments from US franchise taxes, and grants tax breaks to US companies holding conventions in Bermuda.

The TIEA covers taxes on income and capital imposed in Canada, and in Bermuda, income and capital taxes. The TIEA provides for the exchange of information relevant to the administration of domestic tax laws, and information relevant to the determination, assessment and collection of taxes, the recovery and enforcement of tax claims, or the investigation or prosecution of tax matters. The TIEA also provides for the exchange of information held by banks and financial institutions, and information on the ownership of companies, partnerships, and, in certain cases, trusts and foundations. The TIEA also provides a mutual agreement procedure to resolve interpretation or application difficulties.
