Executive Summary: Guam is in the North Pacific Ocean about three-quarters of the way from Hawaii to the Philippines. The 544 sq km island has a population of just over 160,000 (July 2014 est.) of various ethnicities, with Chamorros and Filipinos being the dominant groups. English is however fairly widely spoken. As a territory of the United States, the economy is relatively wealthy with a GDP per capita of USD28,700 in 2010, although it is largely dependent on US national defence spending. Total US grants, wages and salaries, and procurement outlays amounted to approximately USD1.6bn in 2010. However, over the past 30 years, tourism has grown to become the largest income source following national defence. Besides tourism and defence, other significant industries include construction, transhipment services, concrete products, printing and publishing, food processing and textiles.
