Executive Summary: Located in southern Europe with a population of approximately 10.8m, Greece became the EU’s 15th member in 1981 and has been a major beneficiary of development funding from Brussels. Cheap credit and infrastructure spending linked to the 2004 Olympic Games fuelled economic growth in the early 2000s. But, as has been well documented, economic mismanagement by the Government led to catastrophe during the financial crisis and successive waves of austerity measures have kept Greece in recession since 2009. Greece’s development law, which provides tax relief ranging from 50% to 100%, is Greece’s major investment incentive, and the Government is attempting to drive through structural reforms to the economy to attract investment. However, hostility to these reforms from labour unions and the public remains high and a great deal of uncertainty surrounds Greece’s future.
